Tips on getting your child to love Maths!

Updated: Sep 4, 2022

Math may not come easily for everyone but as parents, we can definitely help to make the learning experience more enjoyable for our kids.

Fret not, as there are definitely ways to help make math learning fun. Just follow some of the tips below.

Incorporate math daily

If you are shopping with your child, be it physically or online, try giving them some math money problems to solve.

  • For example, if they want a toy, how long would it take them to save for it if you gave them a dollar each day?

  • How much change would you get if you were to purchase something?

  • If you are at the zoo, ask them how many zebras they can find.

Create scenarios and make math learning a game. By doing this regularly, you will help them to build up their confidence.

Use technology to engage your kids

Technology can be a great motivating factor and there are many fun maths app and websites for your child that will provide them with the opportunity to practice on a regular basis as consistency is key.

There are games and activities and even math worksheets available. Whether it is for Grade 1, 2 or 3 (or Primary 1, 2 or 3) maths, we are definitely spoilt for choice.

Be familiar with the learning standards

It is important to know what your child should be learning at his or her age so that when you incorporate any fun math activities, it will be in line with what they are learning and allows you to adjust it accordingly.

Be able to recognize it if it becomes too easy or too difficult for them as both extremes could be detrimental to the learning process.

Set aside time to solve math problems together to foster a conducive learning environment where your child gets practice, support and encouragement.
